Hi I started taking methotrexate last week, but I just wondered when is best to take folic acid? I've been told to take it twice a week. I've taken it on a sunday and thursday so far, as i started methotrexate on a Tuesday. Just wondered what eveyone else does? Lou xx I love people who can make you smile even when you do not feel like smiling. x

My consultant says it is best taken 48 hours after mtx. I take just one tablet a week, so maybe you should check with your GP surgery or have a word with your nurse xx

I used to take MTX on a Monday and folic acid on a thursday, but now have to take the folic acid six days a week.

I did some research on this and the most consistant advice I could find was to leave 48 hours either side of the mtx.
I take 4 a week, on wed, thurs, fri and sat and take mtx on Mondays.

hi Louise,
it seems to vary but i was told to take mine 2 days after the Methotrexate ... and i take 2 x 5mg dose.

Hi Louise, I was told to take my Folic Acid 24 hours after my MTX on a Saturday. It's different all around the country. Good luck hope you keep well. Lorna x

I take it everyday except the day I take the metotrexate and the day after.

When I was on mtx I took mine the day after my mtx dose. How every Specialist
is different ? ?

I started out with 5mg on Sunday (I take my mtx on Saturday. Then I found I was feeling a bit queasy so it was uped and I now take 5mg every day except Saturday. Isn't it odd how this seems to vary.

Hi Louise, I take my MTX on a Saturday and take one Folic Acid on Mon. Tues. Wed. and Thurs.The reason I take four is because I was experiencing some hair loss and taking the four Folic has definately helped.The rheumy nurse told me not to take the folic the day before and day after the MTX but I know others have been told differently.It all gets very confusing. I take 20mg MTX on a wednesday and 10mg FA on a thursday.

As far as i know it must not be the same day as mtx .I take mine friday after Mtx on Monday the say 3 days after but some people have more doses .of folic acid . I am on only on very low dose of mtx christine The chocolate eating housewife ...The washer woman .....naughty lady

I've seen this on lots of other forums about when and how much folic acid to take. It seems to be different in lots of people of how they have been told to take it.
I started taking MTX last May and was told that new guidelines for NICE was to take one 5mg tablet once a week. Then if I did start to have bad side effects they would increase it. I take my MTX on a Friday and my folic acid on a Monday. My nurse has told me that the MTX it at its optimum level on Mondays and thats why I take the folic acid that day.

I take the mtx on a Wednesday and the Folic Acid on the Friday. It does seem a bit weird though, given that the FA is meant to counteract the nausea (according to my rheumy) so you'd think you'd take it the day after which is when my rheumy says I should get the nausea. The fact that I'm more likely to feel nauseous three or four days after taking the mtx is totally ignored!

it seems to be trial and error as per, i take mtx fridays and folic saturdays and feel fine,thats what i was told to do by nuse and so far works ok,each to how best works for them really.

every day except Friday mtx jab day. It has always been the same for me.
